Otero County, located in the great state of New Mexico, was established on January 30, 1899. Named in honor of prominent politician Miguel Antonio Otero, who was the territorial representative to Congress at the time, the county has a rich historical background.

One significant event in Otero County's history occurred in 1945, when the world's first atomic bomb, called the "Trinity," was detonated at the White Sands Proving Ground, which is part of the county. This marked a key turning point in World War II and signified the dawn of the nuclear age.

The county seat, Alamogordo, was founded in 1898 as a railroad town. It has since grown into a thriving community with a strong military presence, given its proximity to the Holloman Air Force Base and the White Sands Missile Range.

In addition to its military and historical significance, Otero County offers numerous opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The county boasts the Lincoln National Forest and the White Sands National Park, which features the world's largest gypsum sand dune field. The dunes, covering 275 square miles, are a stunning natural wonder and a popular destination for tourists.

Fun Fact: A lesser-known but interesting aspect of Otero County's history is the discovery of a Pleistocene epoch (ice age) fossil trackway. Found in 1987, the tracks revealed multiple species of animals and plants that once lived in the region more than 10,000 years ago, providing valuable insights into the prehistoric ecosystem.
