Humboldt County, located in the great state of Nevada, was established on November 25, 1861, as one of Nevada's original nine counties. The county is named after the Humboldt River, which was discovered by and named after a German naturalist and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt. Spanning over 9,658 square miles, Humboldt County is situated in the northern part of the state, with the county seat in Winnemucca.

Before the establishment of Humboldt County, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Paiute, Shoshone, and Bannock peoples. European-American exploration and settlement in the region started in the 19th century. The California Trail, which pioneers used to travel from Missouri to California during the California Gold Rush in the 1840s and 1850s, played a significant role in the early history of the region. The Humboldt River provided an essential water source for travelers on the trail.

The discovery of gold in 1860 at the site of the future town of Winnemucca led to a mining boom. In 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad was built through the area, further contributing to the region's growth. Ranching, mining, and agriculture have been the primary economic drivers in the county since its founding.

A fun fact about Humboldt County is that it was home to the first silver discovery in Nevada, which spurred the nickname the "Silver State". Additionally, the county is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering attractions like the Black Rock Desert, home to the famous annual Burning Man art and music festival.
