Cattaraugus County, located in the southwestern part of New York State, was founded on March 11, 1808, following its separation from Genesee County. The county's name is derived from the Native American term "gah-ta-ra-ke-ras," which loosely translates to "bad smelling banks." This name likely refers to the odor emitted by natural gas that was found in the area.

The Seneca Nation, one of the six tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy, has a significant presence in the county, with two reservations, including the Allegany Indian Reservation and the Cattaraugus Reservation, occupying portions of the land.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Cattaraugus County was predominantly an agricultural region, producing dairy, lumber, and other crops. Some manufacturing industries also emerged during this time, including furniture manufacturing, tanneries, and paper mills. The area's rich natural resources - specifically, its vast forests - played an important role in its economic development.

Fun Fact: Cattaraugus County is home to the Griffis Sculpture Park, a massive 450-acre outdoor art museum showcasing over 250 monumental sculptures spread throughout its terrain. Established in 1966 by artist Larry Griffis Jr., it is considered the first and largest sculpture park in the United States.
