Chautauqua County is located in the westernmost part of New York State, bordering Lake Erie to the north and Pennsylvania to the south. Established in 1808, the county's name is believed to be derived from a Seneca Indian word, "Jadahwgu," which means "a bag tied in the middle" or "two moccasins tied together," referring to the shape of Chautauqua Lake.

The county has a rich history, initially inhabited by the Erie and Seneca tribes, who were part of the Iroquois Confederation. Europeans first arrived in the region in the early 1600s, with the French and the British establishing trading posts, but their settlements remained sparse.

In the late 1700s, after the American Revolutionary War, the land was given to Revolutionary War soldiers as payment for their wartime service. The Holland Land Company, a land investment firm, bought large tracts of land in western New York and played a significant role in the development of Chautauqua County. Land grants spurred population growth, and the county was officially formed on March 11, 1808.

During the 19th century, Chautauqua County became known for its agricultural and manufacturing industries, including the production of furniture, textiles, and metal works. The town of Jamestown played a prominent role, becoming a center of industrial manufacturing and eventually earning the nickname "Furniture Capital of the World."

A fun fact about Chautauqua County is the Chautauqua Institution, founded in 1874. It is a nonprofit education center that provides an array of educational, recreational, and religious programs annually. The Institution was a pioneer in the establishment of adult education and is well-known for its historic lecture series, summer sessions, and cultural events throughout the year, which have attracted famous speakers such as Susan B. Anthony, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Amelia Earhart.
