Delaware County is a region situated within the great state of New York, United States. This county was founded on March 10, 1797, and was named after the Delaware River, which runs through the area. The river itself was named after Lord De La Warr, an English nobleman and namesake of the state of Delaware.

The land that would become Delaware County was initially inhabited by the indigenous Lenape people, who lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of Europeans. In the 17th century, Dutch explorers began to settle in the region, and Delaware County later witnessed the British colonization of the Americas.

Following the American Revolutionary War, the region experienced growth and development as many New Englanders moved to the area in search of new opportunities. Agriculture played a major role in establishing the local economy, with dairy farming, maple syrup production, and fruit cultivation dominating the landscape.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Delaware County maintained a largely rural character. The area experienced significant economic contributions from industries such as lumber and tanning. Additionally, the construction of the Delaware and Hudson Canal in the 1820s, and the introduction of the railway system in the late 19th century, led to improved transportation and increased trade throughout the region.

Today, Delaware County is known for its picturesque landscapes, abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, and vibrant arts and culture scene. It boasts a rich architectural history, with several historic buildings and charming small towns that continue to captivate visitors and residents alike.

Fun fact: Delaware County is home to the West Kortright Centre, a historic former church built in 1850 that was converted into a nonprofit arts and cultural organization in the 1970s. This unique venue hosts musical performances, workshops, and various events for the community throughout the year.
