Fulton County, located in the great state of New York, was established on April 18, 1838. It was formed from a part of Montgomery County and named after the American inventor and engineer, Robert Fulton, who is credited with building the first successful commercial steamboat. The county is situated in the Mohawk Valley region of Upstate New York and covers approximately 533 square miles. Its county seat is Johnstown.

The region has a rich history, with its roots stretching back to the early Native American tribes like the Mohawk who inhabited the area prior to European settlement. European settlers, mainly of Dutch, German, and English origin, began to arrive in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The first major settlement in the area, Kingsborough, was established in 1752 by Sir William Johnson, who played a significant role in the development of the Mohawk Valley during the French and Indian War.

The Fulton County region saw significant economic growth during the 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to its location near the Erie Canal and the subsequent construction of the railroads. The area became known for its leather industry, glove manufacturing, and agricultural production, which contributed to its prosperity.

A fun fact about Fulton County is that it is sometimes referred to as the "Land of 44 Lakes" due to its numerous bodies of water scattered throughout the region. These lakes not only provide great recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike but have also historically supported the area's prominent ice harvesting industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
