New York County, also known as Manhattan, is one of the five boroughs of New York City and one of the original twelve counties in the state of New York. Established in 1683, it played a significant role in American history.

Before European settlers arrived, the county was inhabited by the Native American Lenape tribe. In the early 17th century, the Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the area, naming it New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British captured New Amsterdam and renamed it New York, after the Duke of York.

New York County was the nation's capital from 1785-1790, during which time the U.S. Constitution was adopted and George Washington was inaugurated as the first President. The Federal Hall in Lower Manhattan served as the first Capitol building of the United States.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Manhattan experienced rapid growth, becoming a major commercial, financial, and cultural center. The construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 fostered trade and interconnected the region to the Great Lakes, further boosting the economy.

In 1898, Manhattan became one of the five boroughs of the newly formed Greater New York City, along with Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.

A fun fact about New York County is that it is home to Broadway, one of the world's most famous theater districts. Broadway shows have attracted millions of tourists, making it a significant cultural and entertainment hub in the metropolitan area.
