Orange County is located in the south-eastern part of New York State, approximately 60 miles north of New York City. Established on November 1, 1683, it is one of the original 12 counties of the province of New York. Named in honor of William III, Prince of Orange and later King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, Orange County has played important roles in various stages of American history.

During the American Revolution, Orange County was a strategic location, with the Hudson River providing a critical communication and transportation route for the Continental Army. Some notable revolutionary battles took place in this region, including the Battle of Minisink in 1779.

In the 19th century, Orange County experienced rapid industrialization and became a center of commerce, attributed to the construction of the Erie Canal and the arrival of the railroad system. The county was known for its prosperous farming communities, and Goshen, the county seat, was home to the first successful production of American cheese in 1841.

Orange County played a crucial role during the 1830s cholera outbreaks, with innovations in sanitation and water supplies largely credited to Dr. David R. Arnell from the town of Warwick.

Today, Orange County is a thriving community with a mix of urban centers, suburban neighborhoods, and picturesque rural landscapes. Over time, it has evolved into a diverse and vibrant region that offers a rich variety of cultural, historical, and recreational experiences.

One fun fact about Orange County is that it is home to the United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802. West Point is the oldest continuously occupied military post in the U.S and has trained and commissioned many notable figures throughout American history, including Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
