Greene County, located in southwestern Ohio, was established on March 24, 1803, and named in honor of General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area and covers approximately 416 square miles. The county seat is Xenia, which is derived from the Greek word for "hospitality."

The area's early history can be traced back to the Native American tribes that inhabited the region, such as the Adena and Hopewell cultures. European settlers arrived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many of whom were Quakers from the Carolinas and Virginia. The establishment of the Northwest Territory led to further settlements and growth in the county.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Greene County played a significant role in the development of higher education and innovation. In 1850, Wilberforce University, one of the nation's first historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), was founded in the county. The Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home, now known as the Ohio Veterans' Children's Home, was established in Xenia in 1869.

One fun fact about Greene County is that it is home to the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where the Wright Brothers developed and perfected their early airplane designs in the early 20th century. Today, the flying field is part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, honoring the significant achievements of the Wright Brothers and the birth of aviation in the Greene County region.
