Lawrence County is located in the southern region of the great state of Ohio, in the United States. Established on December 20, 1815, it was created from parts of Scioto, Gallia, and a small portion of Athens County. The county was named in honor of Captain James Lawrence, a naval officer who fought in the War of 1812 and is famous for his dying command, "Don't give up the ship!"

Ironton, founded in 1849, is the county seat of Lawrence County. The area played a significant role in the iron and steel industries, which thrived through the 19th and early 20th centuries.
