Summit County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Ohio, with its county seat in Akron. Established on March 3, 1840, Summit County was carved out of parts of Portage, Medina, and Stark Counties. Covering an area of 419.38 square miles, it is named "Summit" because of the elevated nature of its landscape, as it marks the highest point of elevation along the historic Ohio and Erie Canal at approximately 1,320 feet above sea level.

Being rich in natural resources like limestone, clay, coal, and salt, Summit County became an industrial center with the 19th-century construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal. The canal facilitated the transportation of goods and resources, and soon industries such as manufacturing, milling, and quarrying flourished. In the early 20th century, rubber and tire industries also became integral to its economic growth.

Akron, the county seat, played a significant role in the development of the region, eventually becoming the "Rubber Capital of the World." It was home to major tire companies, including Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Goodrich Corporation, and General Tire. By 1920, the county's population had surpassed 200,000, and Akron was the fastest-growing city in the United States.

Fun fact: The Soap Box Derby, an annual racing event for homemade, gravity-powered cars built by children, was first held in Akron in 1934. The event gained popularity nationwide, leading to the establishment of the All-American Soap Box Derby championship, which continues to be held in Akron, Ohio, to this day.
