Harney County, located in the southeastern part of the state of Oregon, was established on February 25, 1889. Named in honor of Brigadier General William S. Harney, who served in the Mexican-American War and the Indian Wars, the county covers an area of approximately 10,226 square miles, making it one of the largest and least populated counties in Oregon.

The region has a rich history related to the Native American tribes, such as the Northern Paiute and the Shoshone, who lived in the area for thousands of years. European-American settlers began to make their way into the region in the mid-1800s with the pioneering spirit of the Oregon Trail, wagon trains, and gold rushes, transforming the landscape over time.

With the establishment of the Malheur Indian Reservation in 1872, the Native American tribes experienced relocation and tensions with settlers. The economic foundations of Harney County initially came from mining, ranching, and lumber industries; today, it also includes agriculture, tourism, and research.

One fun fact about Harney County is that it is home to Steens Mountain, a massive fault-block mountain that rises to a height of 9,733 feet above the Alvord Desert, which is Oregon's highest point reachable by car. The Steens Mountain Wilderness offers stunning vistas, deep gorges, and a unique environment characterized by remote, rugged landscapes that attract tourists, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.
