Jefferson County is located in the central part of the great state of Oregon, in the United States. It was established on December 12, 1914, and named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States who championed the idea of western expansion. The county was created from portions of Crook and Wasco counties, encompassing an area of around 1,791 square miles.

The history of Jefferson County can be traced back to indigenous tribes, specifically the Warm Springs and Wasco tribes, who thrived in the region for thousands of years. The county is home to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation which was established in 1855. In the early 19th century, European trappers and settlers began moving into the region, drawn by the fertile land and the promise of the Oregon Trail.

Madras, named after the city of Madras in India, serves as the county seat and the center of commerce and local government. The county's economy mainly revolves around agriculture, forestry, livestock raising, and manufacturing.

A fun fact about Jefferson County is that it is home to Lake Billy Chinook, a reservoir created by the construction of the Round Butte Dam. It is one of the most popular recreational destinations in the region, offering boating, fishing, and camping opportunities to residents and visitors alike.
