Columbia County is located in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania and was officially established on March 22, 1813. The county was formed from parts of Northumberland County and named after the Latin word for Christopher Columbus, the explorer who is widely regarded as the first European to have discovered America. The county seat is Bloomsburg, the only incorporated town in Pennsylvania, which was settled in the late 1700s.

Columbia County's history dates back to centuries before its official formation, with Native American tribes such as the Susquehannocks and the Delaware inhabiting the area. After the region was explored by Europeans, it gradually became a hub for farming, trading, and manufacturing during the late 1700s and 1800s.

The county's economy has historically been driven by its agricultural and industrial sectors. In the 19th century, it was a central location for the American Industrial Revolution, with the establishment of iron foundries and manufacturers of textiles, lumber, and flour. The North Branch Canal was a significant transportation route, connecting the Susquehanna River to the Anthracite mines and facilitating trade between major cities in Pennsylvania.

Fun fact: The Bloomsburg Fair, held annually in Columbia County since 1855, is one of the largest and longest-running agricultural fairs in Pennsylvania. Every year, it showcases livestock, agricultural products, and entertainment for local residents and visitors alike to enjoy.
