.Cumberland County, located in the great state of Pennsylvania, was officially established on January 27, 1750. It was named after the historic English county of Cumberland, and it holds a rich historical background. Situated in the heart of the Susquehanna Valley, Cumberland County originally consisted of parts of Lancaster County.
The county played several crucial roles in American history; it was a significant military point during the French and Indian War, as well as the Revolutionary War. Carlisle Barracks, established in 1757, is the second-oldest active military base in the United States.
Cumberland County has also been home to several noteworthy residents, including: James Wilson (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), Molly Pitcher (a legendary figure of the Revolutionary War), and Jim Thorpe (a well-known athlete with Native American heritage known for his accomplishments in football, baseball, and track).
The county has grown and prospered over the years, with Carlisle as its county seat. Today, it is celebrated for its diverse heritage and historical significance.
Fun fact: The Cumberland Valley Railroad, one of the earliest railroads in the United States, was chartered in 1831 and began operations in 1837.
