Fayette County, located in the southwestern part of Pennsylvania, was established on September 26, 1783, and is named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman and military officer who supported the American Revolution. The county seat is Uniontown, which was founded by Henry Beeson on July 4, 1776.

Fayette County is rich in history and played a significant role during both the American Revolution and the American Civil War. George Washington used the region as a base during the Whiskey Rebellion, the resistance movement against the federal government's tax on distilled spirits in the early 1790s. Additionally, the county is home to multiple historical sites, including Fort Necessity National Battlefield, where Washington fought the French and Native Americans during the French and Indian War. The National Road, the country's first federally funded highway, also passes through Fayette County, highlighting the region's historical importance for transportation and commerce.

One interesting fact about Fayette County is that it was once a major center for the United States' coal and coke industries. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county was home to many coal mining operations and coke ovens, driving significant economic activity in the region. The town of Connellsville, located within Fayette County, was once known as the "Coke Capital of the World" due to its extensive production of metallurgical-grade coke, a crucial ingredient in steelmaking.
