Indiana County, located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, was created on March 30, 1803, from parts of Westmoreland and Clearfield counties. Covering approximately 834 square miles, Indiana County is situated in the western-central portion of Pennsylvania, with the main town being Indiana.

Settlement in the Indiana County region dates back to the mid-18th century, as traders and settlers were drawn to the area due to its natural resources and fertile land. The early inhabitants also engaged in hunting, trapping, and fur trading. Starting in the 19th century, economic activity in the area revolved around coal mining, agriculture, and logging. Around 1840, the first commercial coal mine opened in Indiana County, marking the beginning of a significant coal mining period that lasted for over a century.

Reflecting its agriculture focus, Indiana County is often called "The Christmas Tree Capital of the World," as it has a thriving Christmas tree farming industry. This nickname was earned due to the county's production of over one million Christmas trees per year at one point, a major contribution to Pennsylvania's role as the second-largest Christmas tree-producing state in the USA. Today, Indiana County is still home to numerous tree farms and proudly continues its tradition as a leading producer of Christmas trees.

As a fun fact, Indiana County is also the birthplace of Jimmy Stewart, the famous Hollywood actor known for his roles in classic films such as "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." The town of Indiana celebrates his life and legacy with the Jimmy Stewart Museum and an annual film festival in his honor.
