Luzerne County, located in northeastern Pennsylvania, has a rich historical background dating back to the 18th century. It was officially formed on September 25, 1786, from part of Northumberland County and named after Chevalier de la Luzerne, a French diplomat who played a significant role in gaining French support for the American Revolution.

The region was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Susquehannocks, Delawares, and Shawnees before European settlers arrived. Migration into the area started with the Connecticut settlers in 1769, leading to the establishment of towns such as Wilkes-Barre, named after English Parliamentarians John Wilkes and Isaac Barre. This period was marked by the Wyoming Valley land disputes between Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Eventually, the Decree of Trenton in 1782 resolved the disputes in favor of Pennsylvania.

Luzerne County played a significant role in the industrial revolution in the United States. The discovery of anthracite coal in the region led to rapid growth as coal mining and the Pennsylvania Canal expansion facilitated transportation of this vital resource in the 19th century. This economic boom attracted thousands of immigrants, primarily of Irish, German, and Polish descent, collectively shaping the rich cultural diversity in the county.

One fun fact about Luzerne County is the "Concrete City," which is located near Nanticoke. Constructed in 1911, it was an early example of a planned community built for mine workers by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad's Coal Division. The city, made up entirely of poured concrete homes, was ultimately abandoned by 1924 due to lack of sewer systems and later served as a training ground for state police and urban warfare units. Today, it survives as a unique historical ghost town and a popular site for urban exploration enthusiasts.
