Northumberland County is located in the Susquehanna River Valley in the state of Pennsylvania. The area was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Susquehannock, Delaware, and Shawnee.

In 1768, the Treaty of Fort Stanwix was signed between the British Colony of Pennsylvania and the Iroquois Confederacy, which opened up the Susquehanna Valley for settlement. In 1772, Northumberland County was officially established, named after the northeastern English county of Northumberland. The county seat was situated at the junction of the West Branch Susquehanna River and the Susquehanna River in a town called Sunbury.

Throughout its history, Northumberland County saw significant industrial and commercial development, thanks to its strategic location on the Susquehanna River. The river played a pivotal role in enabling commerce, transportation, and communication between the region and other parts of the state. The county's economy mainly centered around agriculture, manufacturing, and the coal industry.

One fun fact about Northumberland County is the presence of the Joseph Priestley House, located in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. Joseph Priestley, an English scientist and theologian, is best known for discovering oxygen gas in 1774. He moved to Northumberland County in the 1790s to escape persecution in England for his political and religious views. The house now operates as a museum, commemorating Priestley's contributions to science, religion, and education.
