Westmoreland County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Pennsylvania. Established on February 26, 1773, it was formed out of the western part of Bedford County and was named for the historic English county of Westmorland. Covering approximately 1,036 square miles, Westmoreland County initially played a vital role in early American history due to its location along major transportation routes, including the Pennsylvania Road and Forbes Road, which connected the east and west.

During the American Revolutionary War, Westmoreland County was a key frontier region strategically positioned for settlers from various states. Fort Ligonier is an important historic site in the county that played a crucial role during the French and Indian War, as well as the Revolutionary War. The county is home to the Bushy Run Battlefield, where the colonists marked a key victory against Native Americans in the 1763 uprising known as Pontiac's Rebellion.

After the Revolutionary War, the Industrial Revolution led to Westmoreland County's economic expansion, with coal mining and steel production being the primary industries. The county also benefited from the construction of the Pennsylvania Canal and subsequent railroad connections.

A fun fact about Westmoreland County is that it is home to the city of Latrobe, which is considered the birthplace of professional football as well as the site where the banana split dessert was invented. Latrobe was where the first professional football game took place in the 1890s and where local resident Dr. David Strickler created the iconic banana split in 1904.
