Newport County comprises several towns and cities, including Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton, and Jamestown.

Newport, the county seat, was founded in 1639 by a group of religious refugees from Massachusetts. It quickly became an important port city, and by the 18th century, had established itself as a thriving center for trade, shipping, and manufacturing. It also played a significant role during the American Revolution as a key location for the colonial resistance against British rule. After the Revolution, Newport became known for its "Gilded Age" mansions, which served as summer homes for prominent and wealthy families, including the Vanderbilts and Astors.

Newport County is rich in history and culture, with numerous historical sites, museums, and landmarks. Among its most famous attractions are the Newport Mansions, stately homes along the Newport Cliff Walk, and the oldest continuously operating synagogue in the country, the Touro Synagogue.

The museum at the Hall of Fame celebrates the history of tennis and honors its greatest players from around the world. The venue also hosts professional tennis tournaments and events, making Newport County an important destination for tennis enthusiasts.
