.Abbeville County, located in the great state of South Carolina, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1785. The county was named after the French town of Abbeville, which had showed support for the American Revolutionaries during the fight for independence. The region was originally settled by Scotch-Irish and French Huguenot immigrants who were attracted to its fertile lands and abundant resources.
Abbeville County played a significant role during the antebellum period in the Southern United States, as it became a prominent center for agriculture, specifically cotton farming. As a result, the economy flourished, and several influential plantations were established in the area. However, the prominence of the plantation system also led to a high dependence on slave labor, and Abbeville County became heavily involved in the Civil War as a pro-slavery region.
The county is often referred to as the "Birthplace and Deathbed of the Confederacy," as it was the site of both the first meeting to discuss secession from the Union at the Abbeville-Connellsville United Methodist Church in November 1860, and the place where the last Confederate Cabinet meeting was held in May 1865 at the Burt-Stark Mansion.
