Aiken County, South Carolina
.Aiken County, located in the western part of South Carolina, was established on March 10, 1871. It is named in honor of William Aiken, the first president of the South Carolina Railroad Company. The county covers an area of about 1,080 square miles and is bordered by the North Edisto River to the south and the Savannah River to the west. The Savannah River separates South Carolina from Georgia, making Aiken County part of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Yamasee, Cherokee, and Savannah River tribes. The first European explorers arrived in the 16th century, and eventually, the area became part of the British colony known as the Province of South Carolina. Aiken County grew significantly during the late 19th century due to the expansion of the railroad network, which resulted in the establishment of the largest privately-owned railroad company in the world at the time, the South Carolina Railroad.
During the early 20th century, Aiken County experienced rapid industrialization and became home to several major textile mills. The development of the Savannah River Site (SRS) in the 1950s, a nuclear reservation managed by the U.S. Department of Energy, further boosted the county's economy, creating thousands of jobs and promoting population growth.
One fun fact about Aiken County is that it is known for its equestrian roots, hosting the Aiken Steeplechase, an annual horse racing event. The region is also renowned for its polo, fox hunting, and horse training facilities, earning it the nickname "Horse Country of the South."
