Allendale County is a rural county located in the southern part of South Carolina. It was established on March 3, 1919, carved from parts of Barnwell and Hampton counties. The county was named after Paul H. Allen, a prominent South Carolina lawyer, legislator, and railroad commissioner.

The history of Allendale County dates back thousands of years, with the Native American Indians such as the Allen Mound Builders inhabiting the area prior to the arrival of Europeans. English and French settlers arrived in the 1670s and 1680s, establishing colonies and trading posts along the Savannah River. The lush ecosystem of the region allowed for the cultivation of rice and cotton, which became the primary industries in the early 19th century. After the American Civil War, the county's agricultural economy shifted to include tobacco growing as well.

As the railroad industry began to expand and proliferate throughout the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the town of Allendale became a prominent railway hub. This newfound connectivity allowed the area to develop a sawmill and lumber trade, which significantly bolstered the local economy. Today, agriculture remains an essential industry in Allendale County, but other areas such as educational services have also become important contributors to the local economy.

A fun fact about Allendale County is that it is home to the Savannah River Site, a 310-square mile facility managed by the United States Department of Energy. The site was established in the early 1950s to produce materials used in nuclear weapons during the Cold War era. Now, it mainly focuses on environmental stewardship, waste management, and various clean energy initiatives.
