Bamberg County is located in the southern part of South Carolina and was formed in 1897 from portions of Barnwell County. The county was named after William Seabrook Bamberg, a prominent local citizen at the time. The county seat is the city of Bamberg. The land in the area was settled primarily by European immigrants and their descendants, mainly of German and Swiss origin, during the 18th century. These settlers contributed to the growth of agriculture in the region, with cotton and other crops being the primary focus of their farming.

During the 19th century, the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company built a railway line connecting Charleston to Hamburg, passing through Bamberg County. This improved the region's transportation system and promoted further economic development, with the area becoming a hub for railway maintenance and trade.

Bamberg County played a role in the civil rights movement in the mid-20th century. The case of Briggs v. Elliott, filed by African American families from Clarendon County, led to the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which legally ended racial segregation in public schools across the US.
