Colleton County, located in the great state of South Carolina, is steeped in history and culture. Established in 1682, it was one of the three original counties of the Province of Carolina, named in honor of Sir John Colleton, one of the eight Lord-Proprietors who received the Carolinas from King Charles II.

The county's landscape is dominated by the Edisto River, one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in the country, which plays a significant role in the county's development and economy. In the early days, the river was essential for transportation and trade, and vast plantations producing rice, indigo, and cotton were established along its banks. As a result, Colleton County thrived during the 18th and 19th centuries.

During the Civil War, the region saw its fair share of troubled times, experiencing Sherman's historic "March to the Sea" in 1864, which resulted in the destruction of several key transportation and communication channels.

In the post-war years, Colleton County's economy gradually evolved to include logging and the processing of timber, leading to the establishment of the town of Walterboro, which would eventually become the county seat. Today, the county's economy is more diverse, including agriculture, forestry, and manufacturing.

One fun fact about Colleton County is that it is home to the annual Rice Festival, which celebrates the rich history and contributions of rice agriculture to the region. The festival features a variety of rice-based dishes, arts, crafts, and cultural events.
