Kershaw County, located in the great state of South Carolina, boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century. Established in 1791, Kershaw County was named after Colonel Joseph Kershaw, a landowner and prominent figure in the community who laid the foundations for the city of Camden. Camden, the county seat, holds the distinction of being the oldest inland city in South Carolina.

Before its formal establishment, the area played a significant role during the Revolutionary War. In 1780 and 1781, the Battle of Camden and the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill, both critical engagements of the war, took place within Kershaw County. This region was also the site of the last cavalry battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Boykin's Mill, which occurred on April 18, 1865.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the economy of Kershaw County largely revolved around agriculture, especially cotton production. However, as the years progressed, the region became more industrialized, attracting businesses and industries, such as textiles, manufacturing, and milling.

One fun fact about Kershaw County is its preservation of several historic sites and parks, attracting visitors from around the world. It is home to the Kershaw-Cornwallis House, built in 1777, which served as Lord Cornwallis's headquarters during the British occupation of Camden. Today, it is part of the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site, an outdoor museum that provides insights into the area's rich history.
