Marion County, located in the great state of South Carolina, has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. It was created on December 17, 1785, as one of the seven original districts of the state, then known as Liberty County. The county was later renamed Marion District in 1798 to honor Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion. Known as the "Swamp Fox," General Marion was celebrated for his guerrilla warfare tactics against the British during the war.

The area consists of fertile soils, well-suited for agricultural endeavors. Its early economy was primarily dependent on cotton and tobacco plantations, and it later expanded to include lumber. The Great Pee Dee River and the Little Pee Dee River provided excellent access for transportation and trade during the plantation era. Marion County was a significant contributor to the agricultural industry in the region.

With several small towns serving the county, the city of Marion became its administrative center, known initially as "Marion Courthouse." The city was established prior to 1785 and was incorporated as a city in 1892.

The coming of the railroads in the late 19th century had a significant influence on Marion County's industrial and agricultural development. The county also experienced hardships during the South Carolina Flood of 2015, which severely impacted the residents and farmlands.

A fun fact about Marion County is that during the height of the tobacco era, it hosted the annual Mullins Golden Leaf Festival, which celebrated the significant role tobacco played in the area's economy. Now, the annual festival has been renamed the South Carolina Tobacco Festival, showcasing the rich agricultural history of the county, and it continues to be a popular event attracting thousands of visitors each year.
