Orangeburg County, located in the great state of South Carolina, was established on February 2, 1769, and has a deep-rooted history. The county was named after William IV, Prince of Orange, who would later become the king of the Netherlands. It is located in the southeastern part of the state encompassing around 1,100 square miles.

Prior to European colonization, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Congaree and Santee. In the 1730s, the area saw an influx of European settlers, primarily German and Swiss, who established settlements along the Edisto River. The county was mainly occupied by a dense population of African slaves who worked on plantations, and over time, this area became an agricultural and economic powerhouse, producing crops such as cotton, rice, and indigo.

During the Revolutionary War, Orangeburg County experienced several notable events, including the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1781, which marked a major turning point in the Southern Campaign. The Civil War also impacted the area as the Confederacy relied on its resources and manpower.

In the wake of the Civil War, the county saw significant development, including the establishment of Claflin University (1869) and South Carolina State University (1896), two historically black universities that played a critical role in shaping Orangeburg's African American community.

The civil rights movement had a significant impact on Orangeburg County, culminating in the tragic 1968 event known as the "Orangeburg Massacre," where three students were killed and 28 injured during a protest at South Carolina State University.

Fun fact: Orangeburg County is home to the Edisto Memorial Gardens, a striking park that showcases award-winning roses and includes an annual Festival of Roses held every spring, attracting tourists from all over the world.
