Bon Homme County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of South Dakota. The name "Bon Homme" is derived from the French term "bon homme," which means "good man." Established on March 4, 1862, it is one of the oldest counties in South Dakota.

The county's history can be traced back to the Lewis and Clark expedition, which camped along the Missouri River in the area in 1804. European settlers, primarily of Czech, German, and Norwegian descent, began to arrive in the 1850s and 1860s, setting up homes along the river and fertile lands for farming purposes.

Bon Homme County played an essential role in South Dakota's statehood, as it was home to the first territorial legislature meeting in 1862. The county seat, Tyndall, was established in 1885, and it became the hub for business, commerce, and local government activities.

The creation of the Gavins Point Dam in the 1950s, which led to the formation of the Lewis and Clark Lake, had a significant impact on the region, as it shifted the primary economic activities from agriculture to tourism and recreation.

A fun fact about Bon Homme County is that it houses the Tabor Czech Days, an annual celebration in the small town of Tabor, which celebrates the rich Czech culture and history with traditional food, music, costumes, and dance. The event has been a local tradition since 1949 and attracts visitors from all over the region, showcasing the county's unique cultural heritage.
