Clark County is situated in the northeastern portion of South Dakota and was officially established in 1873, named after Newton Clark, a Dakota Territory legislator. Before its establishment, the region was inhabited by indigenous tribes for thousands of years, notably the Dakota Sioux. As more European settlers arrived in the 1800s, the territory experienced an influx of homesteaders and pioneers.

Agriculture has played a vital role in the county's growth, with fertile soil being conducive to farming and grain production. The presence of an active railway system in the late 19th and early 20th centuries provided the necessary transportation for the distribution of these goods. The county seat, Clark, served as an important hub for local businesses and was officially incorporated as a town in 1886.

A fun fact about Clark County is the annual Clark Potato Day, a tradition dating back to 1890. The celebration originally started as a way for local farmers to market their surplus potatoes, but it gradually transformed into a town-wide celebration featuring a parade, rodeo events, car shows, and other festivities. It is still celebrated each year, drawing crowds from across the region to share in the fun and support the local community.
