Codington County, located in the northeastern portion of South Dakota, was established on February 15, 1877. Named in honor of Reverend George R. Codington, a pioneer Methodist minister, the county originally belonged to the Dakota Territory before South Dakota officially became a state in 1889. Watertown, the county seat, was founded in 1879 and later saw significant population growth after the Chicago and Northwestern Railway built a line through the area in the early 1880s.

Agriculture has been the predominant industry in Codington County for many years, with crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa being the primary focus. Additionally, livestock production includes dairy, beef cattle, and hogs.

One fun fact about this region is that Codington County is home to the Redlin Art Center. This center showcases the work of prominent wildlife and outdoor artist Terry Redlin, who was born in Watertown in 1937. The art center features over 150 original oil paintings and offers visitors a glimpse into the life and work of this renowned American artist.
