Hand County is located in the great state of South Dakota, in the Midwestern region of the United States. Established on 26 January 1873, the county was named in honor of George A. Hand, a pioneer and territorial legislator in Dakota Territory. It is situated in an area which, historically, was inhabited by the Sioux Native American tribes.

In the 19th century, this part of South Dakota was predominantly used for fur trading, with European and Americans exchanging goods with tribal communities. The county saw significant growth and development with settlers moving in after the completion of the Dakota Central Railway in 1880. This railway connection facilitated the transportation of goods, people, and resources to and from the region.

Agriculture has been the backbone of the county's economy, with fertile soil and a favorable climate allowing for the growth of crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat. Livestock farming, especially cattle ranching, also thrives in the county.

As for a fun fact, Hand County is home to the Miller Golf Course, where visitors can enjoy a round of golf amidst a scenic prairie landscape, making it a unique golfing experience.
