Jackson County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of South Dakota. It was created in 1883 and named in honor of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. The county seat is Kadoka. Spanning over an area of 1,871 square miles, it is home to a population of around 3,300 residents as of the 2020 Census.

The region was originally inhabited by the Lakota Sioux tribes, who have a rich and complex history in the area. European exploration in South Dakota began in the 1700s, with the arrival of French-Canadian explorers. The United States acquired the region as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the railroad and homesteading played vital roles in the development of Jackson County, with agriculture becoming a significant driving force in the local economy. Today, Jackson County remains predominantly rural, with farming, ranching, and service industries anchoring the economy.

As for a fun fact, the Badlands National Park, known for its striking landscapes of eroded buttes, pinnacles, and mixed grass prairie, extends into Jackson County. This park offers visitors the opportunity to see one of the richest fossil beds in the world, dating back 33 million years. In addition, it has an extensive history of Native American culture and heritage, along with providing habitats for various wildlife species such as bison, bighorn sheep, and black-footed ferrets.
