Lake County is situated in the great state of South Dakota and was officially established on July 3, 1873. Named after the abundant lakes in the area, Lake County is part of the Sioux Falls metropolitan area. The Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota tribes initially occupied this region, and explorers like Lewis and Clark recorded their travels through the area in the early 19th century.

During the late 19th century, European-American settlers arrived in Lake County, enticed by the fertile lands and potential for agricultural development. Madison, the largest city in Lake County, was founded in 1880 and serves as the county seat. Its development was fueled considerably by the arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad, which connected Madison and the surrounding area to major trade and transportation networks.

Agriculture remains the primary industry in Lake County, with corn, soybeans, and livestock being the significant agricultural products. Over the years, the county has also seen growth in education, recreation, and commerce.

One fun fact about Lake County is that it is home to the restored Prairie Village, a historical attraction that reflects life in the early 1900s. Situated near Madison, Prairie Village features a variety of historic buildings and artifacts, including an old-fashioned steam carousel, which is one of only three steam carousels left in the world. This living history museum enables visitors to experience the region's heritage and appreciate the preservation of its rich past.
