Lyman County, located in the south-central region of the great state of South Dakota, was established on March 21, 1890. Named after W.P. Lyman, a state senator and businessman, the county is part of the land originally inhabited by the Sioux Nation, specifically the Dakota and Lakota tribes. When the Homestead Act of 1862 went into effect, it attracted many settlers who claimed the land for farming and ranching purposes, gradually changing the demographic makeup of the region.

Due to the Missouri River running through the county, various fur trading posts were established in the area during the early 19th century. In 1948, Fort Randall Dam was built across the Missouri River, which created Lake Francis Case for flood control, hydroelectric power, and recreational opportunities. The completion of the dam in 1954 added economic benefits to the county, making it a prime spot for outdoor recreation such as fishing, boating, and camping.

Lyman County is also home to Native American reservations. A significant portion of the Lower Brule Indian Reservation lies within the county, where the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe thrives in their continued cultural and historical traditions.

A fun fact about the region: Lyman County is home to the South Dakota Tractor Museum, located in the town of Presho. The museum features antique tractors, farm equipment, and other agricultural memorabilia, providing visitors with a unique insight into the county's rich agricultural history.
