Mellette County, located in the great state of South Dakota, was officially established in 1909, and its name honors the state's fifth governor, Arthur Calvin Mellette. The county has a rich historical background, primarily involving the growth and development of the American West.

Originally, the territory was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Sioux, who had long thrived on this land before the arrival of European settlers. In the 18th and 19th centuries, fur trappers and explorers ventured into the region, followed by settlers arriving in search of fertile land for farming and ranching. The Homestead Act of 1862 further encouraged settlers to move westward.

In 1880, the Dakota Central Railway Company commenced construction on a railroad connecting Sioux Falls with Rapid City through South Central South Dakota, passing close to modern-day Mellette County. This helped with the transportation of goods and people, bolstering the region's economy.

Agriculture has always played a major role in the county, with farming and ranching constituting its primary economic backbone. Cattle ranching, in particular, remains a prominent feature of the county's landscape. Additionally, outdoor recreation opportunities abound in the region, drawing tourists to its picturesque scenery.

Fun Fact: The county seat of Mellette County is White River, which is named after the White River that meanders through the county. The river is known for its milky white appearance, caused by heavy concentrations of certain clay minerals that wash into the water from the surrounding eroded sandstones.
