Perkins County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of South Dakota. It was established on May 8, 1908, and was named in honor of Sturgis, South Dakota, attorney Sturges W. Perkins, who played a significant role in the county's creation. Spread over an area of 2,872 square miles, the county seat of Perkins County is Bison.

Originally, the land was inhabited by various Native American tribes, primarily the Sioux. The territory witnessed a significant influx of European settlers in the late 1800s due to homesteading acts and the expansion of the railroad system. The economy of Perkins County historically relied on agriculture, primarily centered around cattle ranching and grain production.

One fun fact about this region of the USA is that Perkins County is home to the town of Lemmon, which is known for the fascinating Lemmon Petrified Park. The park was built in the early 20th century by amateur geologist and paleontologist Ole S. Quammen and features a large collection of petrified wood and fossils from the area. The park displays these natural wonders in creative, artistic arrangements and is a popular tourist attraction.
