Yankton County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of South Dakota, with its county seat in the city of Yankton. Established on April 10, 1862, it is one of the oldest counties in South Dakota, which was then part of the Dakota Territory. Yankton County comprises an area of approximately 532 square miles.

The county is named after the Yankton Sioux Tribe, who were an integral part of the area's history. During the Dakota Territory era, Yankton County served as an important political, economic, and transportation hub. Yankton's role as a prominent river and rail hub facilitated a rapid influx of settlers and businesses to the region.

In 1861, Yankton became the capital of the Dakota Territory, a title it held until the territory was divided into North and South Dakota in 1889. The town served as a bustling center for trade, agriculture, and government activity, contributing significantly to the overall development of South Dakota.

One fun fact about the Yankton County is that it is home to the Gavins Point Dam. Completed in 1957, it is a major hydroelectric and flood control facility spanning the Missouri River. The dam created Lewis and Clark Lake, a popular recreational destination for boating, fishing, and various outdoor activities.
