Claiborne County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of Tennessee. It was established on October 29, 1801, and named in honor of William C.C. Claiborne, an early Tennessee legislator, and a governor of Mississippi Territory. The county seat is Tazewell, and the largest city is Harrogate.

The area that now constitutes Claiborne County originally belonged to the Cherokee and the Shawnee Native American tribes. As part of the Treaty of Holston in 1791, the Native Americans surrendered to the United States all the territory between the Clinch River and the Cumberland Mountains, allowing European settlers to move into the region. Claiborne County was formed from parts of Hawkins and Grainger counties.

During the American Civil War, the county was a center of Unionist activity, and in 1861, it hosted the East Tennessee Convention, a gathering of pro-Union political leaders who sought to create a separate Union-aligned state in East Tennessee.

One fun fact about Claiborne County is the historical significance of Cumberland Gap. Cumberland Gap is a pass through the Appalachian Mountains where the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia meet. Early European explorers, settlers, and pioneers used this natural pass, making it a key route in westward expansion. The famous Wilderness Road, blazed by Daniel Boone, passed through Cumberland Gap, and an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 settlers traveled through it in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to reach the western frontier.
