Hancock County, located in the great state of Tennessee, was established on January 21, 1844. It was formed from parts of Hawkins and Claiborne counties, and was named in honor of John Hancock, a prominent statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Sneedville, the county seat, was named after William H. Sneed, an attorney who had a vital role in organizing the county.

The county is nestled in the northeastern portion of the state in the Clinch River Valley, covering an area of approximately 223 square miles. The region is known for its picturesque landscapes, with the Clinch River and the Appalachian Mountains as its prominent landmarks.

One fun fact about Hancock County is that it is home to the Vardy Community, a historic Melungeon settlement. The Melungeons are a mixed-race group of individuals whose ancestry has been the subject of much debate and controversy. While their exact origins are still a mystery, they are believed to have a mix of European, African, and Native American heritage. The Vardy Community is essential in understanding the history and culture of this unique group in the United States. The Vardy Community School, which has been restored, now operates as a museum showcasing the history and heritage of the Melungeons.
