Morgan County, located in the great state of Tennessee, was established on October 31, 1817. It was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, a distinguished officer during the American Revolutionary War. The county is nestled on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau, which provides a beautiful backdrop to the region. The county seat is the town of Wartburg.

In the early 19th century, settlers from the Carolinas and Virginia moved into the area, establishing farms and building communities. Prior to that, the area was home to Native American tribes, such as the Cherokee and the Shawnee. Morgan County played a significant role in the Civil War, with several battles taking place in the county.

One of the most notable historical sites in Morgan County is the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, which operated from 1896 to 2009. The prison was built to house miners who participated in the Coal Creek War, a series of labor disputes and skirmishes between coal miners and coal mine operators.

Fun Fact: Morgan County is home to Frozen Head State Park, a 24,000-acre park featuring over 50 miles of hiking trails, cascading waterfalls, and some of the best bird-watching opportunities in the state. The park also hosts the Barkley Marathons, an ultramarathon trail race known as one of the most challenging races in the world.
