Pickett County is located in the upper Cumberland region in the state of Tennessee. Established on February 16, 1879, Pickett County was created from portions of Overton and Fentress Counties. The county was named in honor of Howell L. Pickett, who was a member of the Tennessee legislature during the time of its establishment.

The county seat, Byrdstown, is named after Colonel Robert Byrd, a prominent merchant and Civil War officer. It was incorporated in 1917. As a primarily rural area, Pickett County's primary economic activities have been agriculture, timber, and small-scale manufacturing. The county experienced an increase in population in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as settlers moved there for agricultural opportunities.

In 1937, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) began constructing Dale Hollow Dam, a major dam project on the Obey River, partially located in Pickett County. The dam was completed in 1943 and created Dale Hollow Lake, which spans over 27,700 acres and serves as a popular recreational destination. The lake is home to a variety of water activities and attracts tourists for fishing, boating, and swimming.

A fun fact about Pickett County's Dale Hollow Lake is that it has gained recognition as one of the world's best spots for smallmouth bass fishing, with multiple world record catches at the lake. In fact, the world record smallmouth bass, weighing 11 pounds 15 ounces, was caught by David L. Hayes in Dale Hollow Lake in 1955, which still stands till today.
