Sequatchie County is a picturesque region located in the southeastern part of the great state of Tennessee. Established in 1857, the county was formed from portions of Hamilton, Marion, and Warren counties. Sequatchie County is named after a Cherokee word, "Seqvaji," which means "opossum" - this is due to the large number of opossums found in the area.

The county has a rich history that includes Native American settlements, early European explorers, and eventually settlers from various states seeking new opportunities. The Cherokee and other Native American tribes were present in the Sequatchie Valley, with evidence of their presence dating back as far as 800 AD in the form of burial mounds and primitive hunting camps.

During the mid-18th century, European explorers began to arrive in the area, with the first recorded exploration by the Donelson Party in 1779. Early settlers arrived in the late 1700s and early 1800s, attracted by the fertile land, abundant game, and scenic beauty.

The arrival of the railroad in 1888 brought about a boom period for Sequatchie County. Coal, timber, and other natural resources became key industries that drove the local economy. During this time, several new towns were established, and the population increased significantly.

Today, Sequatchie County is known for its picturesque landscapes which include the beautiful Sequatchie Valley and the stunning Cumberland Plateau. The county also boasts an array of recreational activities, such as hiking, fishing, and hunting.

Fun fact: Sequatchie County is home to the internationally renowned hang gliding school and resort, Lookout Mountain Flight Park. The park attracts thrill-seekers and adventure enthusiasts from all over the world, making Sequatchie County an exciting destination for those looking to experience the freedom of flight.
