Shelby County, Tennessee
.Shelby County, located in the southwestern part of Tennessee, was established in 1819. It was named in honor of Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky. The Chickasaw tribe originally inhabited the land before European settlers arrived. The county consists of seven incorporated municipalities, with Memphis being the largest and most well-known city.
Memphis, founded in 1819 and incorporated in 1826, quickly became a booming trade center due to its strategic location along the Mississippi River, as well as its connection to numerous railroads. The city played a significant role during the Civil War, and by the late 19th century, it became a prominent city in the South. Memphis was also a focal point of the Civil Rights Movement.
A fun fact about Shelby County is related to the iconic music history of Memphis. The city is widely known as the "Home of the Blues" and the birthplace of rock 'n' roll. Many great musicians emerged from the region, such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and B.B. King. Sun Studio, located in Memphis, was the place where many of these artists recorded their iconic hits, and it is still open for tours today.
