Stewart County is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Tennessee. Established in 1803, it was formed from a portion of Montgomery County, and named in honor of Duncan Stewart, who was a signer of the Cumberland Compact, a prominent surveyor, and a state legislator. Covering an area of around 493 square miles, the county seat is Dover, which is situated along the Cumberland River. Dover was once a highly strategic location during the Civil War, as it was home to Fort Donelson, a Confederate fortification.

Speaking of the Civil War, one key event that took place in Stewart County was the Battle of Fort Donelson in February 1862. This pivotal battle led to the Union forces, under General Ulysses S. Grant, capturing the fort and forcing the Confederate troops to surrender. This marked a significant turning point in the Western Theatre of the Civil War and elevated Grant's military career.
