Union County, located in the eastern part of the great state of Tennessee, was formed in 1850 from portions of Knox County, Anderson County, Claiborne County, Campbell County, and Grainger County. It covers an area of about 247 square miles with Maynardville as its county seat. Named in honor of the political and economic union of the United States, Union County is nestled in the ridges and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains.

Over the course of its history, Union County played a significant role in multiple sectors, including agriculture, industry, and the Civil War. The communities around the area typically focused on cattle farming, logging, grist mills, and later on, limestone quarrying. The county was even home to an iron furnace, which was the main source of weaponry during the Civil War.

One fun fact about Union County, Tennessee, is that it is the birthplace of country music legend Roy Acuff, who was born in Maynardville in 1903. Acuff was a renowned fiddle player, singer, and songwriter, contributing greatly to the popularization and promotion of country music throughout the United States.
