Briscoe County, located in the great state of Texas, was officially organized on March 15, 1892. It is named in honor of Andrew Briscoe, a soldier and jurist who significantly contributed to the Texas Revolution. Covering an area of 909 square miles in the Panhandle-Plains region of Texas, the county seat is Silverton.

The history of Briscoe County can be traced back to the ancient Paleo-Indian civilizations that lived there around 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Over time, different Native American tribes, including the Comanche and Kiowa, inhabited the area.

During the mid-19th century, the region started to attract Anglo-American settlers. After the Treaty of Medicine Lodge (1867), many tribes began to relocate to reservations, opening up more lands for settlements. Ranching became the primary industry, and prominent ranches included the Quitaque, JA, and Tule ranches.

Briscoe County saw the arrival of railroads in the early 20th century, which boosted the local economy and contributed to population growth. The county played a vital role in the Plains region's cotton farming and cattle ranching industries throughout the 20th century.

A fun fact about Briscoe County is that it encompasses the Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway. This park is home to the Texas State Bison Herd, which is the last remaining example of Southern Plains Bison - a species that once roamed the area in the millions but now only counts about 100 in number. Visitors to the park can witness the bison roam freely in their natural habitat while enjoying a scenic background of red rock canyons, reminiscent of the old Wild West.
