Clay County, located in the great state of Texas, was officially established on December 24, 1857. The formation of Clay County was inspired by the Texas Legislature's desire to reorganize the boundaries in the region. The county is named in honor of the prominent American statesman Henry Clay, a strong advocate for the American System and a key contributor to important compromises in the first half of the 19th century.

Encompassing a total area of 1,166 square miles, Clay County is nestled in the Red River Valley of North Texas. Its county seat and largest city, Henrietta, was named after the wife of one of the county's founders, W.S. Ikard.

During its early years, the county was primarily inhabited by Wichita and Caddo Indian tribes. European settlement in the area began in the 1850s and 1860s, primarily by cattle ranchers who introduced ranching as the region's primary industry. Throughout the late 19th century, the discovery of oil and gas in north Texas brought economic prosperity and rapid growth to Clay County.

Clay County has a rich association with historical events and influential people. It played a significant role during the American Civil War, with the local men joining Texas Cavalry regiments and Davies' Partisan Rangers in fighting for the Confederacy. Additionally, numerous local families were directly impacted by the Great Hanging at Gainesville, one of the largest mass lynchings in American history.

Fun fact: Clay County was once known as a common battleground for feuds between various cattle ranchers in the late 1800s. A notable confrontation was the Great Clay County Feud, which lasted from 1874 to 1878, and took place between the Marlow and Prothro families over cattle theft accusations.
