Coke County is located in the central-western region of Texas and was created in 1889. It was named after Richard Coke, who served as the 15th governor of Texas from 1874 to 1876. The county was formed from portions of Tom Green County and is part of the Concho Valley. The city of Robert Lee serves as the county seat.

Prior to the establishment of the county, it was inhabited by Native American tribes like the Comanche, Lipan Apache, and Kiowa. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Spanish explorers such as Domingo Teran de los Rios passed through the region. The first significant Anglo settlement in the area occurred in the 1850s, primarily due to ranching activities. Additionally, the area saw a major influx of settlers after the Civil War.

Coke County has a rich history of ranching and farming, which became the economic mainstays of the county. The discovery of oil in the 1940s further contributed to its growth and development. Today, the county remains predominantly focused on agriculture and the energy sector.
